The Teleuts
The Teleuts live in Kemerovskaya Oblast, Altaisky Krai, The Republic of Altai (2594 p.).
The Teleuts people are often referred to in academic literature as the Bachatskie Teleuts, which emphasizes their main area of settlement along the shores of the Greater and Lesser Bachat rivers, which are tributaries of the Innja River. This name further denotes the fact that in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Bachatskie Teleuts represented just one of several territorial sub-groupings Teleuts. Today, the Teleuts inhabit a number of localities in the Belovsky and Gurievsky districts, and in certain areas of the Novokuznetsky district in the Kemerovo region. The 1989 Soviet Census enumerated 2,594 residents of Teleuts origin. (According to calculations made that same year during the course of my own research, about 1,900 of this total were living in the countryside.)
