Nalchik
Nalchik city (1989 pop. 235,000), capital of Kabardino-Balkar Republic, S European Russia, on the northern slope of the Greater Caucasus. A health and tourist resort, it is the gateway to the Mt. Elbrus region. It also also has considerable industry, notably a molybdenum-tungsten mill. Nalchik was founded in 1817 as a Russian stronghold.
In 1743 aul was based on a place of Nalchik , since 1808 administrative - political centre of Kabarda, residence of kabardian princes.
In 1822 Russian fortress of Nalchiks on Caucasian boundary line was constructed. In 1838 at a fortress the military settlement was based , in 1871 transformed in a large village.
Since 1921 city has become the centre Kabardian, since 1922 - centre of the Kabardino-Balkarian autonomous region, in 1936-91 capital of Kabardino-Balkarian ASSR (in 1944-57 - Kabardian ASSR), since 1991 -centre of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic.
Economics
Nalchik is diversified industrial centre.
The enterprises of mechanical engineering: "Sevkavelectronmash", "Sevkavelectronpribor", factories: telemechanical equipment, semi-conductor devices, electrovacuum, high-voltage equipment, machine-tool constructing etc.
Nonferrous metallurgy - a metal works. Light industry: combine "Iskozh", garment factory. Fod industry, manufacture of building materials.
Culture, science, education
The Kabardino-Balkarian Scientific Research Institute of History, Language, Folklore, Literature and Economy, High-mountainous Geophysical Scientific Research Institute, some design institutes. The Kabardino-Balkarian University, Agrarian Institute, Institute of Arts.
