Primorsky krai
The area of Primorsky krai is 165,9 thousand sq. km. The population (January 1, 1998) is 2213,9 thousand people. Density of population (January 1, 1998) makes 13,3 per 1 sq. km. Distance between Vladivostok and Moscow is 9302 km.
This is the place where the largest continent Eurasia meets the biggest Pacific Ocean. Primorsky krai lies almost ten thousand kilometers from Moscow and few miles from foreign countries. In Primorsky krai everything is peculiar: the sea, the sky, the land and the weather. Here drought can be changed by a tropical steady downpour, June may be cold but October warm. Only here you can see the Ussurian tiger and "the root of life" - ginseng, taste the gifts of sea: trepang and mussels.
This land once was named the world's end. Probably, in those times the trip here took several months. Today " the world's end" is just a geographical concept because a plane eats up the distance between Moscow and Vladivostok in 8.5 hours, and the fast train "Russia" goes six and a half days by the Trans-Siberian railway.
The Far East coastline stretches from the north to the south to five thousand kilometers. Primorsky krai is situated in latitude of Crimea. There is even a settlement called Crimea in the southern part of the region, but the average temperature of January in Vladivostok is the same as in Moscow.
It is a road to the ocean. But taiga and hills are still around you.
There are two resorts in Primorsky krai. The first resort is Sadgorod in Vladivostok with natural therapeutic muds and the second is Shmakovsky in Kirovsky district with cold carbonic mineral waters. Presence of silt sulphide therapeutic muds with balneological effect promoted development of the resort in the bay of Expedition.
The national parks are the Verkhne-Ussuriysky, Kema-Amginsky and the Sredne-Ussuriysky parks. The natural parks are Khasansky, Uzhno-Primorsky and Vladivostoksky.
There are some game reserves. They are the Ounce State Republican Zoological Reserve, the Elk State Zoological Reserve, the Taiga State Zoological Reserve, the 'Pacific' State Specific Reserve, etc.
The largest historical and cultural centre of Primorsky krai is the city of Vladivostok. There are more than two hundred monuments in the city. Old and new mixed in the architecture of the city. Buildings of the end of XIX - the beginning of XX centuries adjoin buildings of the end of XX century. Here were kept monuments of the Russian wooden architecture of the end of XIX century. Despite of rapid town-planning of last decades the city still preserves historical buildings and streets.
