Tambovskaya Oblast
Tambovskaya Oblast is situated in the central part of the Oka-Don plain. It borders upon Voronezhskaya, Lipetskaya, Ryazanskaya and Saratovskaya Oblasts.
The main rivers are of the Volga basin (Tsna) and Don (Voronezh, Vorona).
The climate moderately continental. The average temperature of January is -11 degrees, of July - +20 degrees centigrade. Precipitations are about 500 mm a year.
Tambovskaya Oblast was formed on October 20,1932. Its area is 34,3 thousand sq. km. (0,20 % of the total Russian Federation, the 66th place). Tambovskaya Oblast includes 23 districts, 8 cities and towns, 3 urban districts, 13 urban settlements, 304 villages.
The regional center is Tambov. The city was founded in 1636. The distance between Moscow and Tambov is 480 km. The city consists of 3 districts: Leninsky, Oktyabrsky and Sovetsky.
Other cities are Kirsanov (1779), Kotovsk (1940), Michurinsk (1636), Morshansk (1779), Rasskazovo (1926), Uvarovo (1966), Zherdevka (1954) and Zherdevsky.
The population (on January 1, 1998) is 1293,7 thousand people. Density of population (on January 1, 1998) makes 37,7 per 1 sq. km.
The largest cities are Tambov (315,9 thousand inhabitants), Michurinsk (120,0), Morshansk (49,3), Rasskazovo (48,9).
The ancient Russian city Tambov (founded in 1636) attracts with historical and cultural past and present. Its industrial and scientific potential is significant. The Tambov land is connected with such famous people as composer S.Rakhmaninov, admiral F.Ushakov, ingenious scientific V.I.Vernadsky, philosopher N.Fedorov, biologist and selector I.V.Michurin, inventor of the first filament lamp A.Lodygin, diplomat B.N.Chicherin, A. Pushkin, M.Lermontov and many others.
The first governor of the Tambov province was the outstanding Russian poet G.R.Derzhavin.
Churches and estates of the Tambov province are the beautiful monuments of architecture.
There are special water routes for tourists going to visit the most interesting places of the Tambov region.
There are a lot of establishments of culture in Tambovskaya Oblast: various museums, theatres, palaces and clubs.
