The Khakasia Republic
The Republic of Khakasia is situated in the Southwest part of Eastern Siberia in the left-bank part of the basin of Yenisei. In the north and the east it borders upon Krasnoyarsk Territory, in the south and southwest - upon the Republic of Tyva and the Republic of Altai, in the west - upon Kemerovskaya Oblast.
The republic included 3 cities: Abakansk, Sayanogorsk, Chernogorsk, and 8 districts: Altaisky, Askizsky, Beysky, Bogradsky, Ordzhonikidzevsky, Tashtypsky, Ust-Abakansky and Shirinsky.
The administrative centre is Abakan. It is situated in the southeast, on the bank of the river Abakan, the left tributary of Yenisei.
The total area of Khakasia is 61900 sq. km. The population makes 583200 people, 414100 of them lives in the cities. The density of population is 9,4 per 1 sq. km.
Ethnic structure.
According to the All-Union population census of 1989, here lived representatives of 108 nationalities, including Russian (79.5 %), Khakases (11.1 %), Ukrainians (2.3 %), Germans (2 %), Tatars (0.8 %), Byelorussians (0.7 %), Chuvashs (0.6 %), Mordvinian (0.6 %), Poles (0.1 %) and other nationalities (2.1 %).
The climate of Khakasia is distinctly continental, with cold winters and hot summers. The average temperature of July is +19 degrees centigrade, of January 20 degrees below zero. Annual precipitations vary from 250 and 780 mm.
The legislative body.
The Supreme Council of the Republic of Khakasia is the supreme representative and the only legislative body of the Republic of Khakasia. The Supreme Council of the Republic of Khakasia consists of 75 deputies elected by citizens of the republic by the general, equal and direct suffrage for 4 years.
The executive body.
The government of the Republic of Khakasia is the supreme executive and administrative body. It is appointed for the term of office of an elected Chairman of the Government of the Republic of Khakasia and abdicates responsibility at new election of the Chairman of the Government.
The Republic of Khakasia (till July 3 1991 it was the Khakas autonomous region) exists within the modern borders since October 20, 1930.
